You’ve become the version of you who always copes.
Patients trust you. Colleagues rely on you. Your family need you.
You notice the gaps, pick up the loose ends and carry things home because there often genuinely is no one else. And because putting something down can feel as though you are letting patients down or dumping on colleagues who are already drowning.
So even when the work stops, you don’t.
You replay decisions, check messages and use your days off to recover enough to go back. When you finally get some time for yourself, rest can feel selfish -a s though it must first be earned, and the earning is never quite finished.
This is not because you are bad at wellbeing.
It is what happens when a conscientious doctor works in a stretched system for long enough. Coping stops being something you do and becomes who you are.
Permission to Thrive is a place where you do not have to prove that you can cope. It gives you room to think, reconnect with yourself and practise a different way of working - one where you remain the doctor who cares deeply, without carrying everything all of the time.
You don't need another wellbeing tip. You need permission - and a room full of people who get it.
When you join Permission to Thrive, you will
Stop shrinking yourself to cope.
You show up as the doctor - and the human - you actually are, without masking or shape-shifting.
Build a way of working that honours who you are.
You know what you need. You know how to ask for it. And you stop feeling guilty for having needs in the first place.
Craft a job that fits you - not the other way around.
You reshape workload, boundaries and expectations so work stops draining you and starts sustaining you.
Improve your relationships.
At work and at home. You’re more present. Less reactive. More anchored in who you are.
Become part of a community of doctors who truly get it.
No pressure. No judgement. Just people like you - learning, changing and supporting each other.
Remember who you are outside the role.
Your sense of self returns. Your confidence returns. Your life gets bigger again.
You feel like yourself again - present, grounded, human.
Meet the hosts of Permission to Thrive
We’re three doctors who’ve lived the reality you’re living - the pressure, the responsibility, the emotional load, and the fear that one more thing might tip you over the edge.
We’ve each slid toward burnout in our own ways, and each of us has found tools that brought us back.
That’s why we do this work: no doctor should have to figure this out alone.
Dr Rachel Morris
Former GP, Executive Coach, host of You Are Not a Frog.
I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed and one crisis away from not coping.
As a GP, I learned the hard way that protecting your headspace isn’t optional - it’s survival.
Now I teach the tools I wish I’d had 20 years ago: simple, practical ways to stay well in a job that never stops.
Dr Caroline Walker
NHS Psychiatrist and Founder of The Joyful Doctor.
I burned out early in my career - hiding it behind a perfect mask until everything cracked. Getting help changed my life, and I’ve spent the last decade supporting doctors who feel alone, ashamed or at breaking point.
You don’t need fixing. You need understanding, safety and support.
Dr Sarah Coope
Former GP, accredited mediator and conflict resolution specialist.
I spent years caught between difficult patients and complex teams, absorbing stress that was never just mine. I learned that calm, honest conversations, with yourself and others, can change everything - and that boundaries are not selfish, they are kind.
Now I help doctors navigate the interpersonal pressures medical training never prepared us for.

Between each Gathering, you’ll join a gentle one-hour reflection session that helps you stay connected to yourself - without adding pressure or more “things to do.”
You’ll experience:
Gentle reflections
Small-group connection with like-minded peers
Time to breathe beneath the noise
A calm reset for your inner compass
Dates for 2027 'The Restoration Season' to be confirmed.
Join our 2027 gatherings and explore how to rest and restore as a doctor, so you can feel like yourself again
The Restoration Season is about learning how to re-energise - and stay energised - even when the workload does not let up.
We’ll explore how to switch off, make rest actually stick, protect your energy, loosen the grip of guilt and over-responsibility, and create space that is genuinely yours.
Will I fit in?
Between us, we also share something else: all three of us are neurodivergent.
This isn’t the most important part of Permission to Thrive. But it does give this programme something extra.
If you’re neurodivergent - diagnosed, exploring, or wondering - this will feel like a safe place to land.
If you’re not, we hope you’ll be inspired to carve out your own path and embrace solutions and tools that actually work for you (instead of squeezing yourself into someone else’s template).
These tools and this support help every doctor.
What our neurodivergence really means is this:
“We’ve lived the intensity, the overwhelm, and the “just keep going” culture ourselves - and we’ve built PTT to meet doctors exactly where they are.
Permission to Thrive case study
Dr Sarah Steadman, Consultant Community Paediatrician
Sarah joined Permission to Thrive about 12 months into her consultant role - her "dream job" with her ideal team.
And yet she was hitting burnout.
What was going on:
"I should have been working three days a week. But it was quite typical that I would drop my daughter to school and then immediately head to work. I'd be logging on my computer at least an hour before my start time for the day, then come home, put her to bed, and get back to work. Several days a week on my non-working days, I'd have the laptop back on."
She'd tried the usual NHS wellbeing support:
"I was told, take more bubble baths, get more sleep, go for long walks. And I'm like, there are not enough bubble baths in the world to fix the NHS as it stands."
What changed:
"The messages that come through from Permission to Thrive are: it's normal to feel these things. And actually, if you weren't feeling these things, you're probably a psychopath, or you don't care... The message is, this is normal."
Sarah started setting boundaries.
She stopped logging on evenings and weekends.
She practiced our "North Star needs" framework.
She learned to say no - and ask for the impossible.
The results:
"I no longer put my laptop on in the evenings at all - or at the weekends ... When I logged off my computer at the end of yesterday, not only were all of my urgent patient queries dealt with, but all of my other queries were dealt with. My inbox was empty."
Her colleagues started asking: "How did you do this? What are you doing differently? How do I live your life? Because it looks a lot better than mine."
"For me, the combination of listening to the You Are Not A Frog podcast, hosted by Rachel and the Permission to Thrive Community and Gatherings, has really put me back on track. I think if I hadn't found these, I would have been burnt out, off work and looking for a different career."
Plus something Sarah named as crucial: community.
"Seeing those familiar faces on the calls was good... to feel that you're not just in it alone.... everyone else is in it with you, experiencing the same thing."
Why Permission to Thrive is different
Most wellbeing programmes offer generic advice. Permission to Thrive goes deeper - because medicine is different, and so are the people who work in it.
Designed by doctors, for doctors
Root-cause focus, not surface-level wellbeing
ND-aware and psychologically safe
Practical scripts, tools and templates
